As the potter's wheel spun, the handmade process began. The artisan took two handfuls of clay – one white like the pristine snow of a boreal forest mountain, the other black like ink at the bottom of a deep pool – and kneaded them together. But instead of blending uniformly under the pressure of her fingertips, the two colors flowed outward with the force of her palm, like cloudy reflections swirling in a mountain stream as it meanders over a rocky bed.
She didn't try to rigidly control it; instead, she let that natural fluidity guide the shaping of the mug. Once in the kiln, the high heat brought the clay's patterns to vivid life: the whites became more translucent, mirroring the crisp light on snow, while the blacks deepened, like the shadows beneath ancient pines. Where they met, a misty grey emerged, like tree shadows slowly stretching across a wall as dusk creeps over a windowpane.
This mug always brings to mind a rainy afternoon, leaning against an old windowsill, watching the water trace winding lines on the glass. Now, holding hot cocoa, you can almost hear the clay flowing in the artisan's palm within the mug's patterns, and the echo of time slowly passing by.
